It seems inconceivable to me, but Starbucks is a family hotspot. I walked by the Starbucks on, I'm gonna say 78th and Lex, where, in the window, I saw a family of four kids, including a baby. The three kids were each sucking down, what appeared to be a Mocha or Caramel Frappuccino® Blended Crème.
As refreshing as their frosty 16oz drink was, I couldn't help but think that a 13 year old and his younger siblings might have been better off with - I don't know - maybe some fruit, or even the italian ices one door over.
At 430 calories and 140 fat calories, not to mention the überlight 51 grams of sugar, I think, if this is a regular ritual, that this is some form of child abuse. Top off the mix with a (un)healthy dose of caffeine, and I guess the mother/father is getting what they deserve.
Coffee is an acquired taste to some degree, and when I see an adolescent throwing back a cup of coffee, or coffee flavored sugar, it irks me. Seems like the parents should be hooking those kids on the high of life, no?

Well, maybe you can give mom the benefit of the doubt and suppose that this was the once a month sugared treat she lets the kids have. But keep an eye on the Starbucks and if you see her there again soon, call children's protective services.

Also, I think Starbucks has decaf versions of those drinks, but I won't swear to it.

If it was a once a month thing, then my theory about the adaptability of one's taste-buds to the java juice would be bunk. I guess one could argue that people either like coffee or they don't, so in that case...I guess kudos are in order for responsible parenting. On to Mickey D's.

As a kid, I remember going to 7-Eleven and getting Super Big Gulps and candy all the time. A 7-Eleven 64-ounce Double Gulp contains 600 calories, which is all refined sugar and tons of caffeine. Coffee however, was that disgusting thing that mom and dad drank every morning.
Though I'm a bit surprised that coffee is catching on with kids, I'm actually not. In high school in the early 90's, coffee houses were all the rage and trying designer drinks was manditory even if you didn't like coffee. A decade later, it's become more main stream and I'm sure more acceptible that our youth consume it.

If my kid ever goes up to any counter and orders a triple non-fat soy latté with cinnamon, he/she is grounded.
P.S. I don't think that 7-Eleven introduced the Double Gulp until we were at the ripe old age of our mid-teens. I'm taking pre-teen coffee action here.

Off on a tangent I go...
Last night I walked past the Starbucks on 8th and 16th and there was a nice lady passing out samples of their new Light Frappuchinos. Delicious! It didn't have that heavy, greasy feel of their regular Fraps. It was closer to ice than ice cream.
