Dad: "Put A Towel On It."

I figured I would toss this out to the crowd.

Last night, I was ready to go out of my brain. The rain was so heavy that it was hitting our in-window air conditioner with the force of a thousand Neil Pearts. It went on for what seemed like an eternity. To say the least, I didn't get the sound sleep I was expecting.

Has anyone had this problem? Did you solve it when you had it? Is there some gadget, widget or whatsit that call solve this rainy-day nightmare?

Thanks.

hehe -- how very Davidissimo: "I'm having trouble with the weather; is there a gadget that will solve it?" You could, of course, solve the problem by removing a gadget, i.e. the air conditioner itself... but that's probably not the ideal solution.

Since the problem stems from the rain hitting a thin piece of sheet metal (which acts similarly to a cymbol), what you need to do is deaden the sheet metal (choke the cymbol). The towel idea isn't bad, but any cushioning system will work. My first thought was several layers of duct tape.

Sounds like your dad has the right answer.

Anything that has a narrower sound wave range will do the trick. A sheet of plast angled away from the window is one example. Another option is to allow water to hit water which is very quiet. This could be achieved by placing a shallow tray on top of the A/C which would soon fill and force raindrops to fall into a thin layer of water--a soft "plop" intead of a loud "bang!". Sweet dreams.
